Sharing Perspectives on “Linking Daily Life with Climate Change”

On December 17, 2024, two Youth Econet members—Yosuke Torii and Natsuki Nakashima—participated in a Youth Dialogue Session hosted as part of the NIKKEI Decarbonization Project led by Nikkei Inc.

The event brought together members from Climate Youth Japan (CYJ), representatives from eight partner companies, and members of the NIKKEI Decarbonization Committee for a dynamic exchange of ideas.

At the opening, Professor Yukari Takamura (Chair of the Decarbonization Committee, University of Tokyo Institute for Future Initiatives) shared insights from COP29.
This was followed by presentations from each youth organization, introducing their backgrounds and current activities.

Youth Econet emphasized its role as a “bridge between youth and adults”, sharing its commitment to exploring how climate change can be more deeply connected to everyday life.

“The issue for Japanese youth is how to link environmental concerns to their own daily lives.”

— Natsuki Nakashima, Youth Econet (from dialogue session remarks)

Open Dialogue with Corporate Representatives

In the Q&A session with participating companies, youth attendees raised thoughtful questions such as:

“How can companies improve the clarity of their sustainability disclosures?”

“Which types of jobs are directly linked to sustainability efforts?”

Youth Econet highlighted the importance of third-party evaluations and trustworthiness when assessing corporate communications and emphasized the need for transparency and two-way dialogue.

From a talent development perspective, Youth Econet proposed the idea of fostering specialized human resources through industry-academia collaboration.
Corporate participants responded positively, with comments such as “It was enlightening” and “It gave us a wake-up call.”

Reflections and Future Commitment

The session provided a valuable opportunity for intergenerational learning and inspired future action.
Youth Econet reaffirmed its commitment to continue engaging society from a youth perspective, working toward a more sustainable and inclusive future.

We always welcome young people who are passionate about the environment.
Let’s continue learning, sharing, and taking action—together.
