Hi, this is Yukky.
I participated in the “Umi-no-Mori Forest-Building Activity” organized by Mitsubishi Electric!
“Umi-no-Mori” (Sea Forest) is a project where trees and other plants are being planted to create a forest on land that was reclaimed by alternating layers of garbage and soil.
It is also set to be one of the venues for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games next year.
Currently, it’s not open to the public, and it will officially open after the Olympics and Paralympics.
Since it is a competition venue, we weren’t allowed to take pictures of the scenery.
Many trees have already been planted in Umi-no-Mori.
This time, we worked on removing underbrush and trimming branches.
At first, only the trees along the paths were visible, but after the work, we could see the trees further in.
The trees we worked around were Sudajii (Castanopsis).
Common bluebottle butterflies were flying around nearby.
After the work, we took a walk through the park and saw birds eating cherries from Oshima cherry trees.
There were so many insects and animals living on this man-made island…!
I wondered how they got there.
We also saw plants like apple mint, kudzu, butterbur, and dokudami (Houttuynia cordata).
With everyone who helped with the work, we made kaleidoscopes using plants found in the park.
The view of Tokyo from the hilltop was beautiful too.
“Umi-no-Mori” was such a fun experience!
I’m really looking forward to both the Olympics and the park’s grand opening.
